Always for Others

By Easter Almuena

You are the image and likeness of God
But with you the morning awakens
With the call to rise
Not for you
But always for others.

God handpicked you from a myriad of souls
Molded you since you were a babe
To prepare you for a journey
Not for you
But always for others.

God blessed you with wisdom
To use to give form to his plans
And love to carry them out
Not for you
But always for others.

Mary walks with you
Guiding and loving you
For to her you are a Christ
Not for you
But always for others.

You hold the Body of Christ
Embrace his name and proclaim it
And a father and counsellor you have become
Not for you
But always for others.

God forever bless you
Walk and carry you when your feet are weary
Bring peace and joy to your heart
For though your life is never for you
It is Christ’s and he delights in you.

Ten years. A decade has passed. 2010 was the year Vancouver hosted the Winter Olympics. 2010 was the year Apple released the Iphone 4 and the first generation Ipad, which revolutionized the way we watch movies, play games and stay connected. And in 2010 a Canadian kid named Justin Bieber ruled the pop charts.

To me, May 15th 2010 feels like it was yesterday. It was my final year of seminary before I was to be assigned to my first parish, Our Lady of Grace in Aurora. When his eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins anointed my hands and ordained me into the Sacrament of Holy Orders, I was to be part of what the Church calls “Apostolic Succession”, meaning, that I was to be part of an unbroken line of consecrated men that traced its lineage all the way back to the Apostles in order to “Baptize all the nations.” (Matt. 28:19) It was truly an immense gift.

As I look back on ten years, I am still in awe of the many graces I have received from Our Blessed Lord. Who am I to be called to this wonderful vocation? He has called me, a regular city boy from Toronto to bring people to Him, and vice versa. I am not worthy of such a gift, and I speak for all my fellow priests.

My fellow alumni chose a quote from St. John Vianney, patron saint of all priests for our class motto: “The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.” 2010 was the “Year of the Priest,” and it truly was a privilege and blessing to be ordained in that particular year.

And so, as I write this short letter 10 years later, I certainly hope that I have lived up to making sure that I was able to bring the love of the heart of Jesus to all people through my priesthood. Of course, there have been times of worry and uncertainty; challenges in the parish and among fellow priests and parishioners; as well as the expected struggles of living the priestly way of life, but I always think of what St Paul said in his second letter to the Corinthians: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” (2 Cor 4:7)

In the end, it is Almighty God who pours forth His blessings, graces and mercies upon us. It is Almighty God who brings us out of the darkness and into His wonderful light. It is His Holy Spirit which keeps us away from sin. It is our Blessed Mother who keeps us pure. And all the priest needs to do is allow God to work through him.

People often ask me if priests get “lonely.” I can say with the utmost confidence and humility that we priests are not lonely, because we have God, Our Lady, the holy angels, the communion of saints and we have you, our beloved Catholic Church.

Therefore, I wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you, from my first parish to my current one, for all your love, prayers and support. Thank you to my beloved parents, who trusted in God’s call for me, and for all my friends and brother priests and classmates who have journeyed with me.

The priesthood IS the heart of the love of Jesus. May His love continue to bring us closer to Him as we journey together towards heaven. Please continue to stay safe and to pray for each other, especially our priests.

May God bless you all.
